i do this all the time at festivals etc. i get either an old bbq dish or an old drum (you could even dig a shallow hole if rules allow) make your fire etc, let it burn down to cinders and your ready to cook. you need to make sure the mesh is high enough above the embers so as not to burn your munch and the mesh needs to be strong enough so as not to droop into the hot coals when holding your food too. i like to get a whole chicken or a joint of beef and roast it in an old biscuit tin. thats another question entirely though... field food needent be basic.How to cook BBQ food with wire mash and charcoal underneath? first you put 2 cork things on BBQ pit.then you enclose the cork things with charcoal and light the cork things up the charcoal will be hot enough and eventually start the fire or heat(cos you dont use fire to cook food)
