How do you use soaked wood chips on a charcoal BBQ? Do you wrap them or just toss them on the coals unwrapped?

Using water soaked wood chips like misquite or hickory is an awesome way to add flavour to your charcoal BBQ. And, of course, the charcoal alone imparts so much flavour. I have used wood by wrapping it in tin foil with some holes on the top, and then placing it on the coals just before cooking. This works well. But today I just put the chips directly on the coals. Wow! The smoke, the aroma, the flavour was so intense! Does anyone else do it this way? Which method do you favour, and why?How do you use soaked wood chips on a charcoal BBQ? Always mix some wet with dry chips. Wrap them in some alfoil and poke a few holes in it. If you are smoking food for a while make a few pouches and change them after about 1 hour or so. Heat it up first and wait for smoke, then put meat on the grill.

Have a look at this website, he always uses wood chips to BBQ with..

Hope this helps. How do you use soaked wood chips on a charcoal BBQ? Do you wrap them or just toss them on the coals unwrapped?
After you soak 'em, just throw 'em on the coals so they smoke good. I come from a Redneck family and that's the way we do it!!!!! Works wonderfully :-)
I soak the wood chips first, then toss them on the coals. This is the way it is supposed to be done, especially if you want to smoke your meat. Which, by the way, is different from barbecuing. Barbecue means the same thing as grilling; such as a steak, pork chops, etc. Also, on the wood chips that I buy, the directions say to soak the chips first. Continue to enjoy your new discovery!
Hey rrridveitlekp, I've always just tossed them on the hot coals. The only things I wrap in foil to place next to the hot coals are heads of olive oiled garlic and onions (with the peel on. Check with a long toothpick for doneness).
